Wood Types

Padauk

A striking orange-red to deep coral when freshly cut, darkening to a rich reddish-brown over time with UV exposure. Moderately hard (Janka hardness ~1,725 lbf), it machines well and holds up to wear.

Black Limba

Pale golden-yellow to straw-colored heartwood, often with dramatic dark brown or black streaks ("korina" figuring). Relatively soft for a hardwood (~670 lbf), making it easy to work but less durable for high-impact applications.

Cedar (for Charcuterie)

Assuming you mean aromatic red cedar or Spanish cedar used for food-safe applications: warm reddish-brown with lighter sapwood streaks and a distinctive fragrance. Very soft (~350–600 lbf depending on species). The softness and porosity make it better suited for boards that won't see heavy knife work.

White Oak

Pale tan to medium brown heartwood with a distinctive ray-fleck pattern on quartersawn faces. Hard (~1,360 lbf) and naturally rot-resistant due to tyloses that block the pores—ideal for outdoor furniture, barrels, and cutting boards.

Maple (Hard/Sugar Maple)

Creamy white to pale tan, sometimes with subtle gold or reddish tones; prized for figure like bird's-eye or curly grain. Very hard (~1,450 lbf), closed-grain, and food-safe—a go-to for butcher blocks.

Figured Cherry & Plain Cherry

Warm pinkish-tan when fresh, maturing to a deep reddish-amber with light exposure. Moderately soft (~950 lbf). Figured cherry adds curly, quilted, or crotch patterns that catch light beautifully without changing the underlying hardness.

Walnut

Rich chocolate brown to purplish-black heartwood, sometimes with lighter streaks or figure. Medium hardness (~1,010 lbf)—hard enough for cutting boards and furniture, soft enough to carve cleanly.

Purpleheart

Vivid violet to deep purple when freshly milled, eventually oxidizing to a darker brownish-purple unless finished to slow UV exposure. Very hard (~1,860 lbf), dense, and durable.

Osage Orange

Brilliant yellow-gold when fresh, aging to a warm amber or russet brown. One of the hardest North American woods (~2,040 lbf). Exceptionally dense and rot-resistant—historically prized for fence posts and bows.
